Motivation

Each of our group members were being inspired by different factors and their own experiences. These stories are being described below!

Warriors of The Rainbow: Seediq Bale

This movie was the biggest inspiration that motivated our group. It was directed by Wei Desheng and depicts the complete history of the Wushe Incident, including the motivations of each historical figure, the events of the incident, and its aftermath.
The movie was attractive, engaging, and deeply inspiring. In fact, it was the most eye-catching historical fiction movie for us.
To summarize, this movie not only had a profound impact on our group members, but it also resonated with others in the community. It encouraged people to take an interest in history and understand the importance of cultural inheritance. This, in turn, inspired our group to learn more about the Seediq people.

Social Studies Classes in Elementary School

In my childhood, I often saw the news about Taiwan and Japan, and many media made news about the relationship between Japan and Taiwan in many ways. This reminded me of different events that happened in the past related to Taiwan and Japan, including Japan’s colonization and invasion of the tribes. A few years ago, we learned about different countries that occupied Taiwan in social studies class, and I was very interested in the unit. The story of the tribe, Seeqid, and their history of being colonized by Japan, especially, makes this incident more impressive and special to me. The Wushe incident particularly made me feel pity and admiration for those brave heroes who stood out for the Seediq and the whole tribe.

A Song Titled "Sediq Ballad"

Since childhood, one of our team members has been deeply interested in music, frequently participating in various competitions and performances. When in sixth grade, he had the privilege of performing at a grand national event in Taiwan. One of the most memorable performances was a song titled “Sediq Ballad.”

The stage was filled with Indigenous friends, and their born voices seemed to send him into their tribal world. A language he had never heard before, perfectly matched with vibrant melodies and lively rhythms, completely captivated him. From that moment on, he dived into a fascination with the Seediq people.

Long after the event, he remained immersed in their enchanting music, which led him to extensively research various faces of Seediq culture online—such as their cuisine, customs, and, most importantly, their traditional songs, which he has come to cherish.

Past Educational Trip

The idea of exploring the Seediq culture came from a past educational trip, which included visits to Seediq environments, sculptures, and traditional clothing. This experience helped us have a basic understanding of Seediq culture and appreciate the charm of their culture and thus left a lasting impression.

Therefore, when this after-school club began, I immediately felt a sense of affinity with the Seediq people upon first hearing the name. After group discussions, we ultimately voted to focus on the topic of the Wushe Incident.

Although the process will be quite challenging, I believe that through our six months of dedicated research, we will come to admire and respect this unique and beautiful group of people.

Museums Related to Taiwan’s Indigenous Culture

When I was young, my mother often took me to appreciate museums and memorial halls related to Taiwan’s indigenous culture. My parents hope that I can cultivate my interest in history from an early age, and also hope that I can learn to respect each different ethnic group. While admiring these museums, I accidentally saw a statue of the Seediq tribe. That statue deeply attracted my eyes and left a deep impression on me about the Seediq tribe. At that moment, I made up my mind to study the Seediq tribe well.
